Institution Since 1955
In 1955, Henry and Rena Phillips acquired Town Spa — tucked upstairs in a former furniture factory on Porter Street near the railroad crossing. Henry brought his reputation as a masterful pizza maker and got to work, literally walking Sumner Gardens handing out free slices to lure neighbors to his door.
It worked. Town Spa grew to serve thousands of pizzas a week, became the busiest restaurant in Stoughton Square, and on September 9, 1986 — opening night at the new Washington Street location — nearly three thousand patrons poured through the doors.
After Henry's passing in 1973, sons Fran and Dick carried on the tradition alongside daughters Bev and Sandy and their mother Rena. Seventy years on, that same spirit fills every box that leaves our kitchen.
